To understand how to manage and control the mosquitoes in your yard, it helps to know how they reproduce. Mosquitoes must have water to lay eggs. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs about 100 to 300 at a time in water. It will then take 10-12 days on average for these eggs to develop into an adult mosquito. It doesn't take much water for mosquitoes to reproduce by the hundreds and even thousands.
The experts at Ontario Mosquito Control are offering the following strategies to help Canadians control mosquitoes and enjoy their summers outdoors:
TIP:
Canadians should take action to reduce standing water in order to eliminate mosquito threats, including those in children's sandboxes, wagons or plastic toys; underneath and around downspouts, in plant saucers and dog bowls. Other hot spots include tarps, gutters, and flat roofs.
TOSS:
Canadians should take action to remove excess grass, leaves, firewood and clippings from yards.
TURN:
Canadians should take action to turn over larger yard items that could hold water like children's portable sandboxes, wheelbarrows or inflatable water toys.
REMOVE TARPS:
Canadians should take action to ensure tarps are tight when stretched over firewood piles, boats or sports equipment to prevent water buildups. Any tarps that are not in use should be stored indoors to avoid excess standing water.
TREAT:
Canadians should utilize a mosquito elimination barrier treatment around the home and yard. Using a barrier treatment at home reduces the need for using bug spray on the body.
